“100% Free Daily UK and Irish Horse Racing Advice”

Strategy Articles : The straight five furlong specialist speed rating system.

By CJ the online punter team

With the flat season almost upon us once again you may want to try out this simple speed rating system that focuses on five furlong sprint races during the summer months.

About the system...

This system concentrates specifically on on five furlong flat races on the turf only. Races over the minimum distance are regarded by many as “specialist races”  with a handful of trainers  excelling  with their runners over the trip. The method also makes use of the racing posts rating (RP) and their speed figures ( Topspeed ) which are freely available from www.racingpost.com

System Guidelines,

Only use this system at tracks that run Straight 5 furlong races. ( our results show that the Topspeed rating over this type of track have proven to be more accurate. )

Potential selections should be Top or Joint Top Rated regarding the RP rating.

Potential selections should hold the highest or joint highest “Topspeed” figure over the distance at the same or similar straight five furlong courses. ( a top master speed figure is also a positive indicator but not a requirement. )

Concentrate on horses at the front of the market in non handicap races and no bigger than 16/1 in handicap races.

Finding potential bets...

Firstly, check the days  race cards for 5f races at any of the following tracks.

The Racing Post “Topspeed” Card

Using the above table you can quickly find any potential bets. Remember that selections must be Top or Joint Top rated in each the TS , RPR , and DIST columns and that the DIST Rating should have been earned at the same or similar straight five furlong racecourse. The method can be applied to both handicap and non handicap races but proceed with caution when assessing maiden races especially if any runners making their race course debut are at the front end of the betting market.

Additional positive pointers.

The Going speed figure is another clue to a horses claims. I generally look for this figure to be in the top 3 or at least be competitive compared to the other runners.

The Master “Topspeed” figure. Again, look for a competitive rating.

The Trainer. As mentioned earlier certain trainers have excellent records over 5 furlongs and as such can be a strong indication of wether to place a bet or not.
